American-Made Durability

UV-stabilized tubes resist yellowing while die-cast caps and bases shrug off sun, sleet and gnawing, giving each feeder a working life measured in decades rather than seasons.

The Story Behind Droll Yankees

Droll Yankees began in 1960 as a Rhode Island record label, founded by Peter Kilham and Alan Bemis to preserve the dry humour and tall tales of old New England. The name outlasted the records, and it now belongs to one of the most recognised names in wild bird feeding.

Kilham was an engineer, artist and lifelong backyard birder. In 1969 he invented the first commercial tube feeder, the model A-6F, hand-assembling the initial hundred before American manufacturers were brought in to meet demand. That single design reshaped how households feed wild birds.

Production has stayed rooted in Plainfield, Connecticut, where the original standards still govern the range: functional simplicity, honest materials and respect for how birds actually feed. The A-6F remains in the catalogue, barely altered after more than fifty years.

Droll Yankees Questions Answered

Practical guidance on squirrel defence, seed choice, cleaning routines, warranty cover and getting birds to find a new feeder.

What made Droll Yankees feeders famous?

Peter Kilham invented the first commercial tube bird feeder, the A-6F, in 1969. Its clear polycarbonate cylinder and metal ports became the template the wider industry copied, and the model is still sold today.

How does the Yankee Flipper stop squirrels?

A weight-sensitive perch ring sits below the seed ports. Songbirds are too light to trigger it, but a grey squirrel’s weight starts an internal motor that spins the ring and gently deposits the animal on the lawn.

Which seed suits these feeders best?

Black oil sunflower seed performs well across most tube models, along with sunflower hearts, safflower and quality mixes. Nyjer belongs only in dedicated finch feeders, where the narrow ports suit its size.

How often should a feeder be cleaned?

Every two to three weeks during steady use, and more frequently in humid weather. A soak in equal parts white vinegar and water, a pass with a feeder brush and thorough drying before refilling keeps flocks healthy.

Are Droll Yankees feeders made in the USA?

Manufacturing has been based in New England for more than fifty years, centred on Plainfield, Connecticut, with the majority of components sourced from domestic suppliers.

What does the lifetime warranty cover?

Most models carry a lifetime warranty against squirrel damage and defective parts. Replacement tubes, perches, caps and bases are also sold individually, so a single broken component never retires a feeder.

What Backyard Birders Report

Impressions gathered from long-term owners who have watched these feeders through several winters.

Brunette woman outdoor nature portrait

Four years outdoors and the Flipper still spins every squirrel that tries. The birds ignore the drama entirely. Expensive at first glance, cheap once seed stops disappearing.

Eileen B.

Young dark haired man portrait

Best tube feeder purchased so far, and it beats the cheaper brands easily. The ring pull makes cleaning and reassembly quick, and the build quality feels properly considered.

Marcus D.

Goldfinches found the nyjer model within two days. The twist-release base comes apart in seconds, so weekly washing is no longer a chore that gets quietly postponed.
